Sanjay Gandhi Wildlife National Park : |
The Sanjay Gandhi National Park or the Borivali National Park is located in Borivali to the east of the Thane district and at distance of 40 km north from Mumbai. The park extends from the latitude 190°21' in the North to the longitude 720°58' in the East. This Park boasts of being the only National Park in Mumbai. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park was notified in the year 1974. the park is an abode for host of wildlife species like the Antelope, Mouse Deer, Panther and Wild Bear.
The park is the perfect place for the bird watchers of Mumbai. according to the wildlife expert, there are 251 species of birds found in the park including the water and land birds. The park has a large number of bird species like Bulbuls, Golden Orioles, Hornbills, Jungle Owlets, Minivets, Magpies, Peacock, Racket-Tailed Drongos, Robins, Sunbirds, and Woodpeckers. At several occasions, migratory and resident birds like Egrets, Gulls, Herons, Kingfisher, Mynas, Swifts, and Paradise Flycatcher have also been spotted here.
The park has a thick cover of South Indian Moist Deciduous and Semi Evergreen Forest including the Moist Teak-Bearing Forest, Mangrove Scrub, Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous Forest and Western Subtropical Hill Forest. The major trees and plants include Euphorbia, Flame of the Forest, Kadamba, Karanj, Red Silk Cotton, Shisam, species of Acacia, Teak, Ziziphus
and many varieties of flowers. During the monsoon, almost the
entire park is awash with the rainbow hues of the flowers that
bloom here and all over the Western Ghats.

Flora :The forest cover in the park can be divided into two main categories i.e. South Indian moist deciduous and Semi Evergreen. These two types can be further classified into four subcategories and they are moist teak-bearing forest, mangrove scrub, southern moist mixed deciduous forest, and western subtropical hill forest. The region has good biodiversity and major trees and plants include kadamba, teak, karanj, shisam, and species of acacia, ziziphus, euphorbia, flame of the forest, red silk cotton and many more varieties of flowers. During the monsoon, almost the entire park is awash with the rainbow hues of the flowers that bloom here and all over the Western Ghats.
Fauna :One can have encounters with several species including Spotted Deer, Black Naped Hare, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Palm Civet, Mouse Deer, Rhesus Macaque, Bounet Macaque, Hanuman Langur, Indian Flying Fox, and Sambhar.
The reptilian world has 38 species to show off. Tourists can see crocodiles in the Tulsi Lake, and Pythons, Cobras, Monitor Lizards, Russell's Viper, Bamboo Pit Viper and Ceylonese Cat Snake here

Flora:The vegetation type is moist deciduous forest. The tree species found here are Koshimb, Mango, Nana, Kulu, Kalam, Asana, Umbar and Teak in the top canopy. The sanctuary is very rich in avifauna as the ecological conditions of the tract favour a large variety of bird populations. A casual walk through the forests is an unfailing source of joy, with the list of bird-song ringing in the air
Fauna:Rich with natural habitats the sanctuary abounds in bird life with various kinds of resident and migrant birds. One can find around 150 species of birds of resident and 37 species of migratory birds that visit the sanctuary during winters. It has two distinct seasons for bird watching. In the monsoon season one can watch Paradise Flycatcher, Shama or Magpie, Robin, and the Malabar Whistling Thrush, which are some of the most melodious avian songsters.A variety other birds Racket-Tailed Drongo, Red Vented Bulbul, Horn Bill, Myna, Owl, Ashy Rain War Blur, and two rare birds Ashy Minimet and Spotted heart Woodpeckers have been sighted here.

Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary : |

Flora:The land vegetation is southern tropical moist deciduous forest. The major tree species found in this area are Teak, Khair, Ain, Hed, Kalamb, Bibla, etc. Bamboo is also spotted in small patches over here.
Fauna:This Wildlife Sanctuary hosts a wide range of species. There are around 50 species of animals and about 200 bird species in this area. Major wild animals are Panther, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Hyena, Wild boar, Leopard, Jackal, Four-Horned Antelope, Chital, Sambar, Hare, Common Langur, etc.
